Dele Farotimi, a lawyer and leading human rights activist, has made an impassioned call for the general elections of Nigeria in the year 2027 to be free, fair, and credible. While making his presentation on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Farotimi did not hold back on the current situation of Nigerian democracy. He maintained that the 2023 election was a sham, maybe a little bit worse than a sham, and that the nation must never be allowed to repeat the same error. For him, restoring the integrity of the electoral process is not even a political idea; it is a moral imperative.

Farotimi further declared that he would support and vote once more for Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, questioning him as a person who represented the hope of millions of Nigerians who have turned away from the present system. The reasons Farotimi stands behind Obi are the same reasons why he feels Nigeria needs leaders who would genuinely embrace transparency, accountability, and the welfare of the people rather than those who consider governance as their own private enterprise.

He was worried about how the very interests that are meant to operate Nigeria in their favor continue to influence the election outcomes, recycling leadership, and underdevelopment. For Farotimi, the way out for national recovery is to ensure that the people’s votes legitimately count and are respected. He further warned that the continued disregard of democratic processes threatens to push forward into even greater political and social unrest. He transmitted a political endorsement coupled with a civic alarm: Nigeria’s democracy must not be a facade.
