Katsina, Nigeria – April 7, 2025
In yet another horrifying incident of insecurity in northern Nigeria, armed bandits launched a deadly attack in Katsina State, killing at least six people and abducting more than 50 others in the early hours of Monday.
Local sources confirmed that the attackers stormed several villages in the Kankara Local Government Area, arriving on motorcycles and opening fire indiscriminately. Residents described a night of terror, with the sound of gunfire echoing through the communities as people fled into the surrounding bush for safety.
Eyewitnesses say the bandits operated freely for hours without any immediate response from security forces. “They came around midnight and started shooting. They broke into homes, looted food and valuables, and took people away, including women and children,” a resident said under anonymity for fear of reprisal.
The State Police Command has yet to release an official statement, but local vigilante groups and community leaders have begun efforts to account for the missing and support the families of those killed. Security has been reportedly tightened in the affected areas, though many residents remain fearful of further attacks.
This attack comes amid growing concerns about the persistent wave of kidnappings and killings plaguing Katsina and neighboring states. Despite repeated military operations and government assurances, banditry continues to disrupt lives, displace communities, and threaten economic activities in the region.
Calls have intensified for both the federal and state governments to take more decisive action to protect rural communities and bring an end to the violence.
As of now, the identities of the abducted individuals remain unknown, and families are anxiously awaiting word from either the authorities or the captors.
