In his deeply emotional Easter message, Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Kukah, offered a passionate plea to President Bola Tinubu to rescue Nigeria from what he described as a prolonged and agonizing crucifixion. Using the metaphor of the cross, Kukah compared the pain of Christ’s suffering to the daily hardship endured by millions of Nigerians under Tinubu’s government.

He didn’t mince words. “Nigeria is hanging on a cross of poverty, hunger, fear, and frustration,” Kukah said, speaking from his pulpit with a tone that was both sorrowful and defiant. “Our people are tired. The cost of food, the insecurity, the silence of leadership—these are nails driven into the flesh of a suffering nation.”

Kukah’s message landed like a thunderclap. Known for speaking truth to power, he has often used religious holidays to challenge leaders, but this year’s address cut especially deep. His criticism comes as inflation continues to soar and violent attacks plague communities across the country. He challenged Tinubu not just to act, but to lead with empathy and urgency.

“We voted not for empty speeches but for real change,” Kukah said. “It’s time to bring Nigeria down from this cross and start healing the wounds.”
