Gusau, Zamfara State – April 7, 2025

In a significant breakthrough in the ongoing fight against banditry in Nigeria’s North-West, security operatives in Zamfara State have arrested a suspected beverage supplier accused of aiding armed criminal gangs operating in the region.

The suspect, whose identity is being withheld pending further investigation, was apprehended during a targeted operation in one of the state’s rural communities known to be plagued by bandit activity. According to a statement released by the Zamfara State Police Command, the suspect confessed to routinely supplying soft drinks, bottled water, and other consumables to the bandits, fully aware of their criminal operations.

During interrogation, the suspect reportedly admitted that the supplies were not only a source of comfort to the criminals in the forest but also a means of trade that helped maintain their operations. “He confessed that he had been supplying these items for several months and receiving payments either in cash or through stolen goods,” said the police spokesperson.

Authorities believe the arrest could help dismantle a broader logistics network that provides essential items to the criminal groups, allowing them to sustain their presence in remote areas while evading capture.

“This arrest is a step forward in our efforts to choke off the support systems that allow these groups to function. We urge community members to report suspicious activities and support security efforts,” the spokesperson added.

Zamfara State has been a hotspot for banditry, with numerous attacks on villages, kidnappings for ransom, and destruction of farmlands in recent years. The federal and state governments, along with security forces, have intensified operations aimed at restoring peace and stability in the region.

Residents have expressed cautious optimism about the arrest, hoping it will lead to further revelations and help weaken the bandits’ stronghold in the area.

Investigations are ongoing, and more arrests are expected as security agents continue to follow up on leads provided by the suspect.
