Residents of Otukpo, Benue State, took to the streets on Tuesday to protest the increasing cases of killings and kidnappings in the area. The protest was triggered by the murder of a local titleholder, Akatu Onche, and the abduction of his wife, as well as the killing of a petty trader and the kidnapping of her son.
Eyewitnesses reported that before each attack, electricity supply in the community was mysteriously cut off, raising suspicions among locals. Protesters blocked major roads, carrying placards demanding urgent government intervention.
One of the protesters, Daniel Oche, expressed frustration over the recurring violence, accusing the electricity distribution company (JEDC) of cutting power before every attack.
Another resident, Amanyi, called for the removal of the Police Area Commander, blaming him for failing to curb the insecurity.
Despite the growing concerns, the Otukpo Council Chairman, Maxwell Ogiri, declined to comment, stating he was attending a security meeting. Similarly, the Benue State Police spokesperson, CSP Catherine Anene, did not respond to inquiries.
Residents are urging the state government to deploy more security forces or replace ineffective leadership to address the worsening situation.
