Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar seems to have drawn a line in the sand. Amid growing resistance from within his own party — particularly from a bloc of PDP governors — Atiku is moving full steam ahead with plans to build a political coalition with Peter Obi, leader of the Labour Party.

To critics within the PDP, this looks like betrayal. To Atiku, it’s evolution.

“We’re creating a new path,” he said during a recent private meeting that later leaked to the press. “Nigeria needs something bigger than old party lines. We can’t keep doing things the same way and expect different results.”

The friction inside the PDP is real. Several governors are reportedly fuming over Atiku’s unilateral style, arguing that bypassing party consensus weakens internal democracy. But for Atiku, time is of the essence. His camp believes a future electoral victory depends on uniting the fragmented opposition, especially with growing voter fatigue around both the PDP and APC.

Peter Obi, for his part, hasn’t confirmed anything publicly, but insiders say discussions are “serious and progressing.” If the alliance comes to life, it would bring together two of the biggest opposition figures in Nigerian politics — potentially setting up a powerful third force ahead of 2027.

Atiku’s decision may alienate some party leaders, but he seems unfazed. As he told one confidant, “It’s not about party politics anymore. It’s about fixing the country.”
