Former Presidential Spokesman, Reno Omokri, has alleged that Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is only criticising President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reforms as a distraction from his “silence and sadness” over the conviction of Simon Ekpa in Finland.
In a statement released on Thursday on X, Omokri challenged Obi’s credibility, claiming he has failed to present clear policy alternatives for Nigeria.
“Nigerians, ask yourselves, has Peter Obi given you any real plans about how he intends to fix Nigeria? He hasn’t,” Omokri said. “He hides his policy emptiness by waiting for President Tinubu to make decisions, which he then criticises without offering better options.”
Omokri argued that President Tinubu laid out his economic vision in the Renewed Hope Agenda before assuming office, citing key reforms such as the removal of fuel subsidies, floating of the Naira, tax reforms, devolution of power, and student loan initiatives.
According to him, these policies have expanded the economy by $67 billion in two years, growing Nigeria’s GDP from ₦269.29 trillion in May 2023 to ₦372.8 trillion in 2025. He added that non-oil revenue surged by 40.5 percent within the first eight months of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024.
Omokri also highlighted the signing of the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 and its associated reform bills as a landmark step toward equity and prosperity.
He further criticised Obi’s record as Anambra State Governor, claiming poverty rose from 41.4% to 53.7% during his tenure. “Peter Obi is the only Anambra Governor since 1999 under whom poverty increased,” he alleged.
Omokri accused Obi of double standards in his stance on separatist figures, claiming that while Obi criticised Nnamdi Kanu’s trial in Nigeria, he has remained silent on Simon Ekpa’s conviction abroad.
“In the absence of tangible economic plans from Mr. Obi, we can only judge him by his record in office. If he becomes President, poverty will only increase,” Omokri concluded.
