Elon Musk’s AI startup, xAI, has open-sourced its Grok 2.5 model, releasing the 500GB weights and architecture for free on platforms including Hugging Face.
The announcement, made late Saturday, is seen as a major step toward transparency and accessibility in artificial intelligence. By making Grok 2.5 freely available, xAI is giving researchers and developers across the globe the ability to experiment, innovate, and build on its technology.
“xAI will soon be far beyond any company besides Google, then significantly exceed Google. Companies in China will be the toughest competitors, because they have so much more electricity than America and are super strong at building hardware”, Musk announced.
Musk also confirmed that Grok 3 is scheduled for release within the next six months, coinciding with xAI’s rapid infrastructure expansion. Central to this growth is the Colossus data center, currently being developed with 100,000 Nvidia GPUs, which will provide the computing power needed to scale future models.
“The @xAI Grok 2.5 model, which was our best model last year, is now open source. Grok 3 will be made open source in about 6 months,” he added.
Industry analysts say the move strengthens xAI’s position as an emerging competitor to AI giants such as Google, marking a bold step in the race for next-generation artificial intelligence.
