As the summer transfer window intensifies, Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has addressed the media ahead of his side’s first home game of the season at St. James’ Park on Monday night, offering insight into his attacking options, defensive depth, and the club’s latest addition, Jacob Ramsey.
In a thread posted on the club’s verified X handle, Howe said he expects a special atmosphere under the lights at St. James’ Park.
“The first home game is always going to be electric. Evening games are really special for us. I have no doubt this will be a passionate display from the home support. We need to use that energy but not be reckless with it. Concentration and sticking to our game plan will be vital.”
Gordon as Striker
On whether Anthony Gordon could continue to play in a central attacking role, Howe expressed full confidence in the England international’s adaptability.
“He’s done it enough to do the job really well for the team. He plays differently from other strikers, but that can be a positive. He’s got devastating pace, a really good work ethic, and he’s scored goals. I thought he played really well last week in lots of different phases of his game.”
Gordon’s versatility has fuelled speculation that Newcastle may not be in urgent pursuit of a traditional centre-forward before the transfer deadline, though Howe has remained tight-lipped about any incoming deals.
Defensive Options
Howe also praised the performances of Fabian Schär and Dan Burn in last weekend’s win over Aston Villa, hailing their leadership and concentration.
“Fabian and Dan were excellent. Defending, leading, organising — making sure that we concentrated throughout the game. It would have been easy for one slip to cost us.”
He added that Sven Botman, Malick Thiaw, and Jamaal Lascelles remain key options who will have their opportunities across the season.
Ramsey’s Availability
On new signing Jacob Ramsey, recently secured from Aston Villa, Howe confirmed the midfielder is in line for his debut.
“He’ll be available. He’s in a good place and has looked really impressive in his first couple of days. Really good technically, very intelligent, and I think he’ll add a lot to the team. He has standout qualities.”
Ramsey’s arrival bolsters Newcastle’s midfield as the Magpies continue to balance domestic ambitions with European commitments this season.
With the transfer deadline approaching, Howe’s remarks suggest Newcastle’s focus remains on maximizing existing squad depth while integrating Ramsey swiftly into the team.
