The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has approved the establishment of two new Area Commands and the upgrade of five police stations to divisional status in Benue State, as part of efforts to strengthen internal security and enhance policing across the country.

According to a statement from Force Headquarters, conveyed by the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, posted on the Force’s official X handle, the decision follows a comprehensive review of security realities in Benue, particularly in troubled Local Government Areas where police presence and additional deployments are considered crucial.

The newly created commands are:

Daudu Area Command, which will oversee Guma, Daudu, Yelwata, and Agan Police Divisions.

Naka Area Command, which will supervise Naka, Apa, Agatu, and Okpokolo Police Divisions.

In addition, five police stations — Ayilamo, Yelwata, Jato-Aka, Okpokolo, and Agan — have been upgraded to full-fledged Divisional Headquarters.

The restructuring, the IGP said, is designed to bridge operational gaps, enhance police visibility, and ensure more effective policing of difficult terrains. It is also expected to improve response time to distress calls, foster quicker conflict resolution, and bring policing closer to the grassroots for better security outcomes.

IGP Egbetokun directed the Commissioner of Police in Benue State to ensure that officers deployed to the new Area Commands and Divisions demonstrate professionalism, renewed commitment, and dedication to safeguarding lives and property.

He further urged the government and people of Benue State to continue supporting the police, stressing that collaboration between security agencies and communities remains vital to sustaining peace.

The IGP also instructed Commissioners of Police in other states facing similar challenges to devise practical strategies for community-driven policing tailored to their terrains. He assured that the Force Headquarters will provide the required resources to guarantee effective and sustainable security nationwide.
