The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured the conviction of an internet fraudster, Muhammad Kabiru, in Kaduna State for engaging in online impersonation and romance scam.
In a statement released on its official X handle, the Commission disclosed that Justice M.J. Zubairu of the Kaduna State High Court, sitting in Kaduna, on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, found Kabiru guilty of criminal impersonation and sentenced him accordingly.
Kabiru, who was prosecuted by the EFCC’s Kaduna Zonal Directorate, was arraigned on a one-count charge of impersonating American actress Jennifer Aniston through the messaging app Telegram to defraud unsuspecting victims. The charge was brought under Section 142(1) of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017.
Upon arraignment, the convict pleaded guilty. The prosecution counsel, M.U. Gadaka, thereafter urged the court to convict and sentence him in line with the law.
Justice Zubairu consequently sentenced Kabiru to two years imprisonment, with an option of a ₦200,000 fine. The court also ordered the forfeiture of his iPhone 14 Pro to the Federal Government.
The EFCC noted that Kabiru was arrested along with other suspected internet fraudsters by operatives of its Kaduna Zonal Directorate on Governor Road, Kaduna metropolis, following credible intelligence linking them to cybercrime activities.
