The Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured the conviction of three internet fraudsters before Justice D.I. Dipeolu of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos.
In a statement on Monday, August 18, 2025, the EFCC revealed that the convicts — Oyatokun Damilola Qudus, Adenekan Adewole Ayinde, and Adisa Okikiade — were among 93 suspects arrested during a sting operation at a hotel near the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on August 10, 2025.
The defendants were arraigned on separate one-count charges of impersonation and internet fraud, to which they all pleaded guilty.
Prosecution counsel, S.M. Yabo, presented evidence including their confessional statements, forensic reports from their devices, Ayinde’s iPhone 14 Pro, Okikiade’s Infinix smartphone, and a ₦200,000 bank draft made in restitution by Ayinde. The court admitted the items as exhibits.
In light of the guilty pleas and the evidence tendered, Justice Dipeolu convicted the three men.
Delivering judgment, the court sentenced Qudus to one month imprisonment starting from the date of his arrest, with an option of a ₦300,000 fine. Ayinde, who benefited $180 from his fraudulent activities, was handed one month imprisonment with an option of ₦250,000 fine, while his iPhone 14 Pro and the ₦200,000 restitution were forfeited to the Federal Government.
Okikiade also received a one-month jail term with an option of a ₦100,000 fine. The court further ordered that his Infinix smartphone used in committing the fraud be forfeited to the Federal Government.
The defence counsels had pleaded for leniency, noting that the defendants were first-time offenders who had shown remorse.
