The Lagos State Government has commenced the enforcement of its ban on Single-Use Plastics (SUP), beginning operations at Oniwaya Market in Agege.
The State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made the announcement in a post shared on his verified X handle on Monday, August 18, 2025, accompanied by a video clip of the enforcement exercise.
“We are currently at Oniwaya Market in Agege enforcing the ban on Single-Use Plastics (SUP). This follows an extensive advocacy to give traders and residents time to adjust,” Wahab stated.
He stressed that the ban, now fully in effect, was necessary to curb the harmful impact of plastic pollution across Lagos. “Single-use plastics block our drainages, worsen flooding, and endanger our environment. Enforcement will continue across markets and communities, and we will not relent until compliance is total,” he added.
The Commissioner urged residents and traders to adopt reusable alternatives, noting that collective compliance would promote a safer, healthier, and more sustainable Lagos.
The move marks a decisive step by the state government in addressing flooding, environmental degradation, and public health concerns linked to plastic waste.
