Former Governor of Anambra State and former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has called on Nigerians to regard their Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) as the most powerful tool for building a better nation.
In a statement posted on his official X handle on Monday, August 18, 2025, Obi described the PVC as “the voice of the voiceless, the shield of the weak, and the weapon of the poor for a better life, against injustice and bad leadership.”
Reflecting on the recently concluded by-elections across the country, Obi urged Nigerians to get organised, register, collect their PVCs, and make election rigging difficult.
He cautioned voters against selling their votes, warning that politicians who buy votes only see it as an investment to “buy their way into the treasury to steal public funds.” According to him, such leaders end up diverting resources meant for schools, hospitals, and job creation, thereby worsening poverty.
“To those who sell their votes, you are not just selling an election, you are selling the very opportunities that would have lifted you and your family out of poverty,” Obi said, stressing that those who trade votes for money empower corruption and sabotage their own future.
The former Labour Party candidate emphasised that the power to transform Nigeria rests with the electorate, urging citizens to vote for leaders of “competence, character, capacity, and compassion.”
“Our democracy is at stake. That is why I urge every eligible Nigerian to register, collect, and safeguard your PVC, and when the time comes, use it wisely,” Obi declared. “A new Nigeria starts with you.”
