Public interest and human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong has confirmed his inclusion in the newly constituted Public Interest Litigation Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association’s Section on Public Interest and Development Law (NBA-SPIDEL).
The announcement was made in a statement by Prof. Paul Ananaba (SAN), Chairman of the Transitional Committee of NBA-SPIDEL, and shared by Effiong on his verified X handle.
According to Prof. Ananaba, the committee will comprise prominent public interest litigation practitioners in Nigeria, tasked with challenging executive, legislative, and administrative actions by all levels of government and their agencies that violate the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria or other laws. It will also take on actions by private entities deemed to be against public interest, safety, law, and order.

Prof. Ananaba emphasized that NBA-SPIDEL is the arm of the Bar responsible for advancing the association’s core values—promotion of the rule of law, protection of human rights, upholding constitutionalism, and ensuring due process in governance.
“The Litigation Committee is a crucial arm of the section, which is expected to deploy the powerful instrument of public interest litigation and advocacy in ensuring that the legal profession reclaims its place as the bastion and custodian of these core values,” Ananaba stated.
The constitution of the committee signals a renewed push by the NBA to take an active stance on public interest legal battles across Nigeria.
