United Kingdom Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, has condemned the Israeli government’s decision to further escalate its military offensive in Gaza, warning that it would only deepen the humanitarian crisis and prolong the conflict.
In a statement posted on his verified X handle on Friday, Starmer said the move was “wrong” and urged Israel to reconsider immediately, stressing that increased military action would “do nothing to bring an end to this conflict or to help secure the release of the hostages” held by Hamas.
“It will only bring more bloodshed,” Starmer wrote. “Every day the humanitarian crisis in Gaza worsens, and hostages taken by Hamas are being held in appalling and inhuman conditions. What we need is a ceasefire, a surge in humanitarian aid, the release of all hostages by Hamas, and a negotiated solution.”
The Prime Minister reiterated that Hamas could have no role in Gaza’s future and must disarm and withdraw, adding that the UK was working closely with allies on a long-term peace plan as part of a two-state solution.
“Together with our allies, we are working on a long-term plan to secure peace in the region as part of a two-state solution, and ultimately achieve a brighter future for Palestinians and Israelis,” he said. “But without both sides engaging in good faith in negotiations, that prospect is vanishing before our eyes. Our message is clear: a diplomatic solution is possible, but both parties must step away from the path of destruction.”
Starmer’s remarks come as tensions in the Middle East reach a new high, with Gaza facing worsening shortages of food, water, and medical supplies, and international calls for restraint growing louder.
