Darwin Núñez is edging closer to a sensational move to Al Hilal, after a verbal agreement was reached between the Saudi Pro League side and Liverpool, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

In a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, Romano confirmed that a club-to-club agreement is in place, with negotiations now focused on personal terms between Al Hilal and Núñez. The final decision, he notes, rests with the Uruguayan striker, but talks are ongoing.

“Al Hilal are close to getting Darwin Núñez deal done. Club to club agreement is done, while Al Hilal are in talks with Darwin over personal terms. Decision up to Núñez but talks underway — Inzaghi wants him,” Romano posted.

Al Hilal’s pursuit of Núñez comes as part of their ongoing strategy to bolster their squad with top European talent. Having already secured marquee names in recent seasons, head coach Simone Inzaghi is reportedly keen to make Núñez the focal point of his attacking line.

Núñez, 26, joined Liverpool from Benfica in the summer of 2022 for a fee that could rise to £85 million. While he has shown flashes of brilliance in his time at Anfield — including key goals and a relentless work rate — he has faced scrutiny over consistency in front of goal.

With Liverpool undergoing a rebuild under new leadership and Núñez seeking a more central role, a move to the Middle East could represent a fresh start and a lucrative opportunity for both the player and the Reds.

If personal terms are agreed upon, Núñez will become one of the highest-profile transfers to the Saudi Pro League this summer. The deal is expected to include a significant fee for Liverpool, along with a multi-year contract for the striker.

Fans and pundits will now be watching closely to see whether Núñez gives the green light to complete the switch — one that could reshape his career and further signal Saudi Arabia’s growing influence in world football.
