Manchester City are preparing to offer a new contract to star midfielder Rodrigo Hernández Cascante, also known as Rodri, extending his stay at the Etihad Stadium until June 2029, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano.

In a post shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, Romano revealed that the new deal is almost ready and is part of City’s plan to reaffirm their long-term trust in the Spanish international. The proposal is expected to make Rodri the second-highest-paid player at the club, behind only Erling Haaland.

“Manchester City are prepared to offer new deal to Rodri — valid until June 2029. The club wants to show trust in Rodri with new deal almost ready to be offered,” Romano posted. “He could become second-best paid after Haaland. Decision will be up to Rodri.”

Rodri, 28, has become an irreplaceable figure under manager Pep Guardiola, playing a pivotal role in City’s domestic and European dominance over the past few seasons. His composure, vision, and tactical intelligence have made him arguably the best defensive midfielder in world football.

Since joining from Atlético Madrid in 2019, Rodri has amassed over 250 appearances for the club and scored several key goals — including the winner in the 2023 UEFA Champions League final, which secured City’s first-ever European crown.

The proposed extension comes amid growing interest in Rodri from top European clubs, but City remain confident in retaining their midfield anchor, viewing him as central to their continued success.

While Rodri has yet to make a final decision, the lucrative new offer and the club’s intent to reward his consistency and leadership signal a strong desire to keep him at the heart of City’s project for years to come.
