Protest Erupts in Akure Over Killing of Five Ondo Farmers by Suspected Herdsmen

Tension gripped Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Wednesday, as farmers staged a protest over the alleged killing of five individuals by suspected herdsmen in Aba Oyinbo, a community in Akure North Local Government Area.

Escalating Violence in Ondo Communities

Reports indicate that the assailants stormed the community in the early hours of Wednesday, opening fire on their victims. This latest attack follows a similar massacre barely two weeks ago, in which at least 14 people were killedacross four nearby communities—Ademekun, Aba Pastor, Aba Sunday, and Alajido.

Farmers Demand Government Action

Angry protesters, mostly farmers, marched to the Ondo State Governor’s Office, chanting solidarity songs and calling on Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to intervene urgently.

One of the protesters, identified as Jonah, decried the continued bloodshed, alleging that armed attackers were infiltrating Ondo from neighboring Edo State.

“We are being slaughtered without anyone doing anything. Akure North is under siege. We are farmers, not criminals. We are appealing to the governor, the police, the army, and Amotekun to save us before more lives are lost,” Jonah stated.

Security Forces Deployed

In response to the protests, security operatives were deployed to maintain order and prevent any escalation of violence.

Meanwhile, residents and community leaders are urging both state and federal governments to take decisive action to curb the rising insecurity and protect vulnerable farming communities.
