Following Nigeria’s emphatic victory in the final of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has warmly praised the national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, for emerging champions of Africa for the fifth consecutive time and their seventh overall title in the tournament’s history.

In a post shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, the President celebrated the team’s historic achievement, writing:

“You did it, girls! @DtigressNG. Superb performance to become 5x consecutive Champions of Africa and seventh overall. Well done, Coach Rena and the team. You have made Nigeria proud. I am expecting you all, along with the trophy. #MissionV – Done & Dusted.”

The message came just hours after D’Tigress defeated Mali 78-64 in the final played at the Palais des Sports, Treichville, Abidjan, on Saturday, August 3, 2025. The triumph capped a dominant campaign for the team and extended their unbeaten run in AfroBasket to 29 games over a decade—a streak unmatched on the continent.

The win sealed Nigeria’s fifth consecutive AfroBasket title, extending their incredible unbeaten run to 29 games over the last ten years and lifting their seventh overall continental crown, a record that solidifies their status as Africa’s basketball powerhouse.

The reigning champions put on a clinical performance in the final, showcasing their depth, discipline, and championship mentality from tip-off to the final buzzer. Nigeria controlled the pace of the game with strong defensive plays, accurate perimeter shooting, and a dominant presence on the boards.

Leading into the final, D’Tigress delivered a gutsy 75-68 semi-final win over arch-rivals Senegal, a match widely considered the “final before the final.” That victory not only secured their spot in Saturday’s showdown against Mali but also confirmed their place in the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifying tournaments, scheduled for March 2026.

The triumph was also historic for Rena Wakama, who became the first female head coach to lead D’Tigress to an AfroBasket title in back-to-back tournaments, continuing her impactful leadership and strategic brilliance on the sidelines.

With this latest championship, Nigeria continues a golden era in women’s basketball, marked by continental dominance, rising global recognition, and a new generation of talented players who have carried the torch of success with pride and consistency.

As the team celebrated their hard-earned victory, tributes poured in from across the country, with President Bola Tinubu among those proud of the squad for bringing glory to Nigeria once again.
