Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has confirmed that at least seven people, including a child, were killed in a Russian attack on Kyiv, describing the assault as “extremely insidious” and aimed at overwhelming Ukraine’s air defense systems.
In a statement posted to his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday morning, Zelenskyy said he had received an urgent report from Ukraine’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Ihor Klymenko, following the deadly strike on the capital city.
“All emergency services are involved in saving as many people as possible after the Russian strike on Kyiv. Searches are underway for people trapped under the rubble. Some have been rescued. Information on each name is being verified,” Zelenskyy stated.
According to the President, dozens were injured across several districts of the city. As of the latest update, 64 people sustained injuries in the attack, and 50 remain hospitalized. Among the wounded are nine children. A total of 80 individuals have received emergency assistance so far.
Zelenskyy added that multiple civilian structures, including residential buildings and public facilities, were damaged in the bombardment. Among the sites hit was one of Kyiv’s mosques, underscoring the widespread destruction and indiscriminate nature of the attack.
The strike, which targeted Kyiv with a combination of Iranian-made “Shahed” drones, other unmanned aerial vehicles, and missiles, was “deliberately calculated to overload” Ukraine’s air defenses, the President said. While Kyiv bore the brunt of the assault, damage was also reported in other regions.
“Rescue operations will continue as long as necessary — until the fate of every person is clarified,” Zelenskyy affirmed. “There are sufficient forces and resources. I am grateful to everyone who is working to save lives and provide assistance.”
The latest attack comes amid a renewed wave of Russian airstrikes in recent weeks, heightening international concern over the escalation and the humanitarian toll on Ukrainian civilians.
