A powerful 8.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia early Wednesday, triggering widespread tsunami warnings and watches across the Pacific, including Hawaii, Japan, Alaska, and the U.S. West Coast.

The quake, which occurred deep in the Pacific Ocean, prompted immediate alerts and evacuations in several coastal communities. While no fatalities have been confirmed at this time, damage to coastal infrastructure and flooding have been reported in some affected areas, with emergency teams conducting ongoing assessments.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), U.S. President Donald J. Trump addressed the unfolding situation:

“Due to a massive earthquake that occurred in the Pacific Ocean, a Tsunami Warning is in effect for those living in Hawaii. A Tsunami Watch is in effect for Alaska and the Pacific Coast of the United States. Japan is also in the way.”

Shortly after, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security also issued an alert via X, urging people to act with urgency:

“Please be advised that there is a tsunami warning in effect for Hawaii. There is also a tsunami watch for Alaska and the west coast of the United States. Find high ground and stay safe.”

Authorities across Hawaii and parts of coastal California, Oregon, and Washington have urged residents in low-lying areas to evacuate immediately to higher ground. Local officials in Japan have also activated emergency protocols as waves were observed reaching portions of the eastern coastline.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center confirmed that waves generated by the quake have already impacted parts of the Aleutian Islands and eastern Russia, and are expected to affect additional coastlines throughout the day.

Emergency sirens have been activated in several areas, and residents are being told to avoid beaches, harbors, and marinas, and to follow official updates closely.

Seismologists warn that aftershocks may follow and that further tsunami waves could still be generated, depending on undersea movements. Evacuation shelters have been opened in Hawaii, and National Guard units have been deployed to assist in coordination and relief.

Officials urge the public to stay alert and monitor official channels for the latest safety instructions as the situation develops.
