A tragic mass shooting unfolded Monday evening in Midtown Manhattan when a gunman opened fire inside a high-rise office building at 345 Park Avenue, leaving four people dead, including a New York Police Department (NYPD) officer, before taking his own life.
According to the New York Post, which reported the incident via its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the shooter has been identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura. Authorities say Tamura entered the building armed with an AR-15-style rifle and began firing indiscriminately on the 33rd floor, triggering panic and chaos throughout the tower.
Emergency responders quickly arrived on the scene, where they found multiple casualties and began securing the area. Despite rapid intervention, four victims were confirmed dead at the scene, among them a responding NYPD officer whose identity has not yet been released pending family notification.
Tamura reportedly turned the weapon on himself shortly after the attack. His motive remains unclear.
The building, which houses offices for several major firms, was placed on lockdown for several hours as law enforcement conducted a floor-by-floor search to rule out further threats. NYPD officials confirmed the scene has been fully contained, and a joint investigation is underway involving local and federal authorities.
“This is a deeply disturbing and senseless act of violence that has shaken our city,” said NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban during a late-night press briefing. “We are committed to uncovering the details surrounding this horrific event and supporting the families of the victims.”
Mayor Eric Adams also expressed his condolences and called for unity in the wake of the tragedy, adding, “Our hearts are with the families, the NYPD, and all those affected by this horrific act. We must do more to address the growing scourge of gun violence.”
Authorities have not yet released information about how Tamura accessed the building or whether he had any known connection to the victims. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage, digital evidence, and Tamura’s background as part of a broader inquiry into the incident.
This marks one of the deadliest mass shootings in New York City in recent years and has reignited debate over gun control laws and building security protocols in urban centers. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
