A recent photo of Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, speaking with ex-Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai has stirred heated online debates, especially among Obi’s loyal supporters. The image, posted by activist Moses Paul on May 11, 2025, showed the two men in conversation during an event at the University of Cambridge.

Paul clarified that the event, contrary to online speculation, did not take place in the United States but in the UK, during a Fireside Chat Briefing tagged “The Making of a Future President.” The gathering was meant to feature panellists including Peter Obi and South African opposition leader Julius Malema. Malema, however, was denied a visa by UK authorities and could not attend.

The image of Obi and El-Rufai together surprised many given their previously divergent political positions. While some observers viewed it as a healthy display of political maturity, others in the Obidient movement expressed discomfort, seeing it as a potential compromise of ideals. The conversation sparked by the image highlights the ongoing tension between political pragmatism and ideological loyalty among supporters.
