In a rare and direct critique from the pulpit, Pastor Joshua Selman has challenged Nigeria’s churches to stop hiding behind prayers while the country crumbles. Speaking during a recent sermon that has since gone viral, Selman said many churches have contributed to Nigeria’s problems by failing to act when leadership fails.

According to Selman, churches often tell their members to “just keep praying” while they themselves remain silent on issues of governance, injustice, and national decay. He said this approach has enabled corruption and weakened the moral authority of religious institutions.

The reaction has been swift. Some applauded the pastor for his courage, saying he spoke a truth many have avoided for too long. Others were less enthusiastic, arguing that the church’s primary role is spiritual. Still, Selman’s message has added fuel to a growing debate about the role of religion in Nigeria’s socio-political crisis and whether the pulpit should be a place of comfort or confrontation.

What exactly does he want the church to do? Preach about the government?

It’s high time we start understanding that “the church” is an instrument used by government to maintain false consciousness in the people.
Let’s trace it back to the colonial period; the main reason the colonialist brought religion to Africa is to aid their main agenda exploitation and make us believe there is a better place in heaven so anything we are enduring on earth is for a short while. So there is this” hope” that have sowed the seed of false consciousness in Nigerians today that even if the economy is bad or if government are doing their due diligence,They would rather pray than fight or revolute for their rights.
So the church have created enabling environment that people are just praying without doing anything about the government I.e protesting for the government to perform their responsibilities among others.

The church has an active role in calling out the vices within the society. It must not just act on the sidelines but actively call out corrupt leaders and their practices.
