The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has issued this public health warning to Nigerians advising them not to take too much salt after a now-viral footage featuring Pastor Chris Oyakhilome purportedly advocating for the eating of more salt. The video would hype concerns, and the ministry was bound to give a response that is truly founded on science.

“High salt consumption is directly linked to increased risk of hypertension, heart disease, stroke, and kidney problems,” the ministry stated. “Nutritional advice should always come from qualified health professionals and should be based on proper research and evidence.”

Online, for sure, the critics would be divided with some on the pastor’s side and others condemning his phenomenal message as a detrimental one. Health workers claim that Nigeria is already fighting a constant increase in the toll of non-communicable diseases, and misinformation, regardless of good intent, seriously affects when it comes into confrontation with authentic medical advice.

The ministry asserted that public figures must be very careful against making health claims and urged the public to always subscribe to medically certified information over any form of anecdotal, spiritual advice on lifestyle or diet.
