Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has announced plans to resettle 6,000 families currently living in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps. The decision, revealed on Monday, is in response to growing concerns over rising prostitution and other social problems in the camps.

“We cannot allow our people, especially women and children, to continue living in environments where they are exposed to exploitation and hardship,” Zulum said during a press briefing.

The families, most of whom were displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency, will be moved to newly built housing units in safer areas of the state. The government says it will also provide basic amenities, education, and job opportunities to help the families rebuild their lives.

Governor Zulum’s plan is part of broader efforts to close down IDP camps in Maiduguri and return stability to Borno State

Resettlement is of paramount importance, and relocation commitments must be pursued along with the provision of the security, means of living, and ongoing help to refugees.
