The ChessMasters tournament, a brand-new inter-school competition was held on Saturday, 3rd May 2025 at the Eko Hotels & Suites in Lagos. Designed as an annual gathering for Africa’s brightest young minds, the event was already being hailed as a major step forward in promoting chess culture on the continent.

This isn’t just about checkmates and trophies. The organizers are on a mission to integrate chess into the educational fabric of African schools. They believe the game teaches discipline, strategy, patience, and intellectual confidence all critical skills for students navigating a complex world.

The atmosphere was vibrant, with top schools from across Nigeria and other African countries competing. Scholarships, chess training programs, and grants for school clubs are all part of the prize pool. For many of these students, it’s more than a competition;it’s a launchpad.

As chess enjoys a global resurgence, this tournament could become a cornerstone for talent development in Africa. And if all goes well, ChessMasters might soon rival some of the biggest school tournaments in the world.
