In what many are calling a surreal display of digital vanity, U.S. President Donald Trump posted an AI-generated image of himself dressed as the Pope on his Truth Social account. The image, which shows Trump in full papal regalia ;white robe, mitre, and a large golden cross  was shared late Friday night and has already triggered a wave of reactions online.

For some, it was another example of Trump’s signature bravado. For others, it crossed a line. Many questioned the timing and appropriateness of the image, especially as it came just days after the funeral of Pope Francis, who died in April due to complications from a stroke and heart failure. Trump had attended the funeral alongside other world leaders, making the image all the more jarring to some observers.

Critics accused Trump of trivializing a solemn religious role and using AI technology to stoke his ego. Supporters, however, saw it as tongue-in-cheek or simply part of his ongoing media strategy to stay in the spotlight. Either way, the post reignited concerns about the use of AI for self-promotion and misinformation, especially by high-profile political figures.

This isn’t the first time Trump has played with exaggerated imagery to project power, but the pope depiction blending politics, religion, and technology  may be one of his most provocative digital moments yet.
