The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has responded strongly to claims that the commission is being used by President Bola Tinubu to silence political opponents. In a country where suspicion often trails government institutions, his words come as both a defense and a plea for the public to look beyond politics and focus on facts.

Olukoyede made it clear that the EFCC is not a weapon for settling political scores. He pointed out that more members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have been investigated and prosecuted under his watch than members of the opposition. According to him, these investigations are based on evidence, not party loyalty.

He emphasized that corruption is not a partisan issue. “Financial crimes don’t wear party colors,” he said, dismissing the narrative that the agency is being used to target specific individuals because of their political affiliations. Olukoyede urged Nigerians to stop framing anti-corruption efforts as political persecution, adding that this mindset only undermines the fight against corruption.

He also acknowledged that the EFCC has a long road ahead, and its work will only be meaningful if the public supports it, regardless of who is in power. In a country where public trust in institutions is often weak, Olukoyede’s comments may not convince everyone but they do underline the EFCC’s need to protect its credibility.
