Former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, is back in court. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has re-arraigned him on fresh charges tied to the alleged misappropriation of a staggering ₦854.7 million during his time at the apex bank.

Emefiele, who served as CBN governor from 2014 until 2023, appeared before a Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja where the EFCC laid out an amended charge sheet. The charges revolve around claims that he unlawfully approved and disbursed funds, bypassing due process and violating financial regulations.

This isn’t the first time Emefiele has been dragged into legal troubles since leaving office. His tenure, especially in the final years, was mired in controversy, ranging from his aggressive monetary policies to alleged secret expenditures and breaches of the CBN Act.

The re-arraignment marks another chapter in the legal battle surrounding one of the most high-profile figures in Nigeria’s financial history. For many Nigerians, the case is a test of the government’s willingness to confront corruption at the highest levels, not just on paper but in the courtroom.
