Nigerian singer Spyro has opened up about the risks he believed he was taking when he teamed up with Afrobeats heavyweight Davido. In a recent interview, Spyro admitted he was aware that working with such a dominant figure could potentially stall his personal momentum in the music industry.
According to him, he had doubts—not because Davido wasn’t talented, but because he feared being overshadowed. Spyro described it as a calculated risk. He believed that when an upcoming artist collaborates with a much bigger name, there’s a high chance the audience only sees the star and not the rising act.
“I actually thought my career was going to suffer after that collaboration,” he said, referencing their joint work on the remix of his breakout song. Despite the fear, Spyro went ahead with it, saying he ultimately respected Davido’s talent and generosity.
Looking back, Spyro said the experience was a mix of blessing and lessons. It brought him more visibility but also challenged him to find ways to maintain his own identity in the industry. His reflection speaks to the tension many emerging artists face when aligning with more established names—it’s not just about the exposure, but the long-term impact on how you’re perceived.
