What was supposed to be the night of glitz, glam, and celebration turned into a tense affair when two of Nollywood’s stars, Laide Bakare and Eniola Badmus, came to loggerheads at the premiere of Owambe Thieves, which took place in Lekki.
The event held at Circle Mall was apparently going to be a high-profile one attended by most Nigerian entertainment stars. It is said that all eyes shifted as Laide Bakare was seen on the red carpet, visibly angry and confronting Eniola Badmus, who remained calm despite being clearly irritated as Laide animatedly gestured at her. Their confrontation was recorded, and the video made it to social media, sending many into frenzy. Some fans speculated that perhaps their differences dating back to years of latent online jabs had boiled over. Others said that the disregard might have stemmed from personal or professional tension behind the scenes.
What provoked the clash was never stated by either actress publicly, but many insiders say it was not the first sign of friction between these two ladies. “This type of thing doesn’t just come from nowhere; they’ve had small problems in recent times,” said a source at the premiere.
Interestingly, despite the drama, the premiere itself was a success. Viewers that remained after the clash applauded Owambe Thieves, the comedy feature starring Eniola Ajao. But as most follow Nigerian celebrity feuds, the film’s publicity now may be set to eclipse the movie — at least for a little while.
