Sokoto Warns Residents as Meningitis Cases Rise

In a statement issued Tuesday by Nura Maikwanci, the Information/Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Health, Commissioner for Health Faruk Wurno confirmed that laboratory tests have identified multiple cases of the disease.

To contain the outbreak, the government has intensified surveillance, case management, and public health interventions. Residents have been advised to take preventive measures, including maintaining hygiene, avoiding overcrowded places, ensuring proper ventilation, and seeking medical attention if they experience symptoms such as fever, severe headache, or neck stiffness.

Meanwhile, in Kebbi State, authorities have confirmed 26 deaths linked to a suspected meningitis outbreak in Aliero, Gwandu, and Jega local government areas.

Cerebrospinal meningitis is a serious infection that causes inflammation of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It is commonly caused by bacteria or viruses and can spread from person to person. Symptoms include fever, severe headache, nausea, vomiting, neck stiffness, and sensitivity to light. If left untreated, it can lead to severe complications or death.

Health Commissioner Wurno assured the public that Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto has made essential medications available at health centers across the state. He urged residents to report any suspected cases to the nearest health facility for prompt treatment.
