The Nigerian Police have launched an investigation into claims of alleged infiltration of the National Assembly by Russia’s former security agency, the KGB (Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti).
Senator Sunday Karimi, representing Kogi West, was invited for questioning at the Police Headquarters following a petition from his colleague, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who is currently serving a six-month suspension from the Senate.
The Petition and Allegations
In a petition dated March 5, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan called for a thorough investigation into Senator Karimi’s claims that the KGB had infiltrated the National Assembly, warning that such a development posed a grave threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
The petition referenced a report allegedly shared by Karimi on the 10th Senate’s official WhatsApp group on February 23, titled:
“KGB Agent Warns Senate: A Call for Vigilance Amidst Threats to Democracy.”
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan urged the police to take the matter seriously, stating:
“No nation can afford to ignore the presence of such a group within its legislative body.”
Police Interrogation and Senator Karimi’s Response
Further investigations revealed that Senator Karimi appeared at the Louis Edet Police Headquarters on Monday in response to the invitation. Sources at the police headquarters confirmed that he acknowledged posting the report on the Senate’s WhatsApp group but insisted that he had no malicious intent.
As the investigation continues, authorities are assessing the credibility of the claims and their potential implications for national security.
