25-Year-Old Man Dies by Suicide in Osun Amid Economic Hardship

A young man, Joseph Abodunrin, has taken his own life in the Dagbolu community of Osogbo, Osun State, citing unbearable economic hardship.

His passing was confirmed by a family member, Grace Abodunrin, who shared the tragic news on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday. She described him as a loving brother who always put on a brave face despite his struggles.

“I still feel shattered. He encouraged us all, yet he was suffering in silence. He hid it so well behind laughter and smiles. Now, we are left with only memories,” she wrote.

Joseph had previously expressed suicidal thoughts in multiple social media posts, revealing that his siblings were the only reason he had held on for so long. In a tweet from January 31, he wrote:

“If not for my siblings, I would not commit suicide. Those younglings are still full of optimism, hope, and dreams that I don’t want to squash with the news of my death.”

On March 24—the day he ended his life—he revisited that tweet and left behind a heartbreaking message:

“I’m sorry I failed you all. I just couldn’t do it anymore… No matter how I explain it, you won’t understand. But I hope you keep fighting and never give up on your dreams. That’s my last wish.”

He also mentioned that his passwords were written on the first page of his diary, implying that he had planned his exit meticulously.

Earlier in March, Joseph had questioned why he continued to fight for survival, stating that he had found no compelling reason to keep going. He lamented that his struggles were beyond his control, shaped by circumstances he had no power over.

Despite his farewell messages, his body has yet to be recovered. While he shared his location before taking his life, reports suggest that the location tag, “Dagbolu,” is no longer active.

When contacted, Osun State Police Command spokesperson ASP Akeem Adeoye said he was not aware of the incident but promised to investigate further.

Joseph, who celebrated his 25th birthday on February 6, 2025, leaves behind grieving loved ones who now urge others to prioritize mental well-being.

This tragedy is a stark reminder of the silent battles many people face. If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, please seek support from trusted friends, family, or mental health professionals. Help is available, and no one should have to suffer in silence.

Committing suicide isn’t an option in life. Pray to God and wait for his miracle.
