Edison Ehie, the Chief of Staff to Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and former factional Speaker of the State House of Assembly, has alleged that he was offered ₦5 billion to initiate impeachment proceedings against the governor.
Speaking at a public gathering in Ahoada East, Ehie stated:
“They invited me to impeach the governor and offered me money, which I rejected. Because I refused, they conspired and declared me wanted.”
Ehie did not name those allegedly behind the offer. His statement comes amid ongoing political tensions in Rivers State, which have seen a division between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
The crisis escalated in October 2023, when an explosion occurred at the State House of Assembly during reports of an impeachment attempt. Following these events, Ehie was declared wanted by security agencies in connection with the assembly’s invasion.
While his claims add to the controversy, no independent evidence has been presented to substantiate the bribery allegation. The unfolding political situation in Rivers State continues to generate discussions on governance, loyalty, and power dynamics in Nigerian politics.
